The first European settlement in Texas was a Spanish mission established in 1682 at Ysleta. The village was near the present day city of El Paso and was meant to bring Christianity to the native people. However, the missions were difficult to maintain and often abandoned. This made the Spanish claims to Texas land difficult to control. The land known as Texas now was fought over and colonized by the Spanish, French, and eventually Mexican and American settlers.
